What to know Before Contacting with a Software Development Company

Oct 24th, 2009 Posted in General | no comment »

No excuse for vulnerable software no matter how insensitive the applications data is. Although the application is as insensitive as a computer game if insecure it could give access to your entire computer.

Its easy to forget how much time and effort has to go into writing great code and as deadlines near and clients change their mind on specification it can be hard. Often referred to as classic coding errors people looking to exploit software can usually do so fairly quickly as a computer usually runs many programs at any giving time.

Why unsecure software happens

Lack of motivation
Recent data suggests that good motivation within the development team helps produce better software If you are looking to have software developed ask the company how they motivate the development team

Squeezed Work Place
Having worked in IT for some time I find it strange that a survey created by DeMarco and Lister contained over 60% of developers has poor work conditions. The survey noticed considerably better work output in the 40% that were happier with their working conditions.

Successfully Completed Job yet Unhappy Client
As clients see the application being developed peace by peace they often come up with new ideas. It can also work the other way and hold up payment from the client to the developer as they expected more that was delivered to them. Spend as much time as possible creating a contract of work which clearly in fine details outlines exactly what you want as a client and what will be delivered.

Diverting Waste Through Recycling

Oct 24th, 2009 Posted in General | no comment »

Introduction

Throughout history, recycling has existed in one form or another. Even as long ago as 400 BC signs of early recycling are known to have taken place. Archaeological studies show that ancient waste dumps contained less of what is known today as household waste, such as pots, tools and ash, which demonstrates that people were, even back then, keen to reuse materials at a time when natural resources were not so freely available. Little did they know that what they were starting would play such a huge role in shaping the world for future generations.

Indeed it could be argued that the old ‘rag-and-bone’ man was an early recycler collecting discarded goods on his horse and cart, before reusing or turning the collected items into something new.

During periods such as the World War Years, recycling and reuse were common place as natural resources became much more difficult to come by. As well as food being rationed, certain materials such as metal and fibre were largely allowed only for use by the government in support of military operations, to meet manufacturing requirements often in the production of weaponry. A desperate need to support the military.

In the 1970’s, the need to recycle aluminium increased due to rising energy costs. As a material aluminium utilises much less energy in the production process than some other materials and was therefore much sought after. The need for aluminium saw the rise of scrap metal dealers who were willing to pay money in exchange for good quality metal. Also, in the 70’s in parts of the United States of America, the first vehicles were seen to be collecting waste with a separate trailer for the collection of recyclable materials being towed behind the vehicle.

To the late 1980’s, early 1990’s and as the importance of managing the global environmental state increased amongst worldwide governments, the focus upon recycling really started to gather momentum. In the UK, the government imposed recycling targets upon Local Authorities and with the introduction of the new legislation upon the waste industry, recycling schemes really began to take off. The once commonly known waste disposal companies, began to call themselves waste management companies and demonstrated through the offer of waste collection and recyclable material collection that waste needed to be handled more effectively. Local skip companies needed to become better at what they did.

Today, many hundreds of materials and products can be recycled, ranging from paper, card, glass and plastics, to mobile phones, electrical items, printer cartridges, textiles, clothing and concrete. The demand for different types of collection receptacles has increased dramatically.

What is Recycling?

The term recycling describes the process of converting used materials to new or nearly new materials to avoid the need for potentially useful materials or products to be discarded. Essentially it is diverting waste from landfill.

In a world where climate change is high on the environmental agenda, recycling plays a key role in reducing the need to unnecessarily send waste materials and products to landfill or other waste disposal options. This reduces the need or the reliance upon consuming fresh or new raw materials, reduces energy use and reduces air and water pollution, all of which contribute to lower greenhouse gas emissions. Significant contributions to improving the environment.

Recycling is probably mostnoticeable through the recycling services now provided by local councils for domestic refuse and recycling collections and by modern waste management companies who generally offer a full range of waste and recycling collection services.

Technology used in the glass recycling process can convert it back to a very useful material, not just for reproducing glass bottles, but also for use in aggregates and in the construction of roads.

In the waste sector, the common promotional activity surrounds the waste hierarchy – ‘reduce, reuse, recycle and recover’. This slogan is a simple message designed for a far reaching audience. Think about how you can reduce your waste. Can the waste products or materials be reused? Can the waste product or material be recycled? Many questions to consider.

The waste hierarchy is a strategy which many waste management companies and local authorities consider when developing new waste strategies. The strategy is intended to focus the mind around preventing waste being produced in the first place. Consider the options for reuse and recycling but ultimately minimise the amount of waste produced at the end of the cycle.

So the emphasis is very much on the entire production process. The waste hierarchy extends much wider than to waste management companies and local authorities. Working groups have been set up to bring many industries together to consider the entire waste cycle. For example, the manufacturer of a product needs to consider how the product is to be manufactured. Can parts be used which can later be recycled or reused? Can the amount of packaging which surrounds the product be reduced? When the product reaches the retailer, is it necessary for the product to be placed within an outer package? Once the retailer sells the product, what will the purchaser do with the unwanted elements of the purchase, i.e. the packaging? How will the packaging be collected and where will it go? Will it return to a recycling plant, for onward shipment to a reprocessing plant, where the cycle begins all over again? The process must be simple to manage and implement.

How are Materials Collected for Recycling?

Legislation now dictates that all waste should be treated to avoid the amount of recyclables and unnecessary waste going direct to landfill. Since 1996, UK government has enforced a landfill tax on all waste disposed of within landfill. The rate of tax has increased considerably in recent years rising from the original level of £8 per tonne, to today’s rate of £40 per tonne. The UK government has previously announced that this will increase further to £48 per tonne by the end of 2010/11. This rate applies to all general waste streams, although there is a lower rate for inert materials. Sending waste directly to landfill is an expensive option and finding suitable methods to divert waste away from landfill is now a priority.

So, the message to everyone is clear, segregate your waste to reduce the volume of waste going to landfill. Traditionally, at home or at work, as soon as you place waste in the container , it is forgotten about. Someone else will collect it and take it away. Nowadays, at home and at work, recycling is being encouraged through the provision of containers in which to place certain recyclable materials.

Perhaps the most common materials to be seen being collected for recycling are paper, card, glass, metals and plastics. But the opportunity to recycle a vast number of materials or products continues to grow. Although technically not seen as recycling, food waste and garden waste collections are increasing, where the food or garden waste is taken back to a plant for processing into a reusable or saleable compost product.

Local and national paper recycling companies operate in most parts of the UK.

The methods of collecting materials or waste to be recycled is also increasing and becoming more noticeable within local communities. Dedicated collection sites, often referred to as a bring bank sites, are springing up in supermarket car parks to encourage customers of the supermarket to return such items as bottles, newspapers or card to the containers on their way into the supermarket. Shoppers are therefore encouraged to bring back their recyclables.

Local Authority waste collection crews or their appointed contractors will collect refuse and recyclables from the kerbside usually at the front of your home. Collection from domestic premises generally remains the responsibility of the local council and many have now employed the provision of boxes in which to collect specified recyclable materials or products. The services do vary from council to council.

In the industrial and commercial sector, waste management businesses offer separate containers in which the customer deposits the appropriate waste stream or recyclable material ready for collection. The containers will often be clearly labeled as to which recyclable product should be placed within that container or bin. Alternatively, the bins will be colour coded to identify which recyclable products should be placed within which bins. Waste management companies may have to deal with special requests from the customer.

The key to a successful recycling initiative is educating about what can be recycled and how. In the commercial world getting the buy in of office employees is crucial. The introduction of any recycling scheme must ensure that in asking staff to separate waste for recycling, it does not become time consuming and affect the efficiency of what employees should be doing in their work. The introduction of any recycling scheme should be kept simple.

The Recycling Process

Various collection systems exist for the collection of the recyclable products . Whichever collection system is employed , the materials are taken to a recycling centre where they will be segregated from other wastes.

To begin the recycling process from a collection point of view, the more recyclable material which can be separated at source, i.e. at home or in the work place, the more efficient it will be for the waste collector. That is why separate containers are supplied to the waste producer to encourage separation at source. If card can be collected on a vehicle, which will collect no other waste material, the card will be kept uncontaminated and therefore will have a higher value when it reaches the processing plant. Similarly, specialist glass collection vehicles are used to collect only glass. Apart from the obvious health and safety reasons and the weight of collected glass, it will have a much higher value if the collected glass load is not contaminated with other waste. Uncontaminated recyclables will have a much higher value than contaminated materials.

Once collected, the recyclable materials can be taken direct to a reprocessing plant, if the load contains only that specific type of material. So a dedicated glass collection vehicle could take the load directly to a glass processing plant. It is more likely that the glass will have to be bulked up for onward shipment to the processor.

If mixed recyclables have been collected such as paper and card within the same container, it may be necessary for the collector to take the load to a materials recycling facility to unload and allow the load to be sorted into separate paper and card bundles for onward transport to a paper or card processing plant. Whichever method is used, the recyclable material collected will usually be sorted or washed before going through to a reprocessing plant to be processed to a new resource and ultimately used as a new product or in manufacturing.

Most major supermarkets now site recycle bins as drop off points to collect recyclables in their car parks.

The Increasing Importance of Recycling

In the UK around 35% of waste collected from households is recycled or composted. Whilst in the commercial and industrial sector, the volume of waste sent to landfill has declined substantially in recent years and the amount of waste now being diverted for recycling or reuse by this sector has risen above the volumes going to landfill.

Landfill continues to play an important role in the management of waste across the UK as not all wastes can be recycled and some are more suited to landfill disposal than by any other means. However, it’s not just the increasing costs of disposing of waste directly in landfill which is making recycling a more attractive option for businesses. Landfill is becoming scarce, with some experts suggesting that the amount of void available across all UK landfill sites, has less than ten years existence remaining before all sites are deemed to be full. So what will happen to the waste then?

In recent years, waste management companies have started to consider and invest in new technologies, such as energy from waste plants, anaerobic digestion plants and mechanical biological treatment plants, as alternatives to landfill. Local Authorities have also adapted their views by undertaking comprehensive strategic reviews as to how waste under their jurisdiction should be handled. In some cases this has meant that unitary authorities are implementing plans to introduce long term contracts, usually around 25 years in length, through which to manage their entire waste management requirements. These contracts will often include the need to build a facility through which to handle all waste generated across the county by sorting all waste streams. The contracts may also include the collection of all waste and recyclables from households across the area. So the face of waste management is changing rapidly. The days of just throw it in the dustbin have disappeared and the advent of new technologies are upon us.

Conclusion

Recycling is here to stay. It has evolved over the years from something that was undertaken without any real thought behind it. The trusty rag and bone man was just trying to make a living. Today, many blue chip organisations are setting out plans for a ‘zero to landfill’ waste policy, where the intention is very clear – reduce waste, reuse waste and recycle waste, but no waste must end up in landfill. Some companies have announced ambitious target dates by which to achieve such policies.

Many homes across the country now have some form of bin in which to separate waste for recycling. The need to separate newspapers, aluminium cans and plastic bottles are almost common place. Whilst in industrial and commercial sectors, there is an increasing list of items to consider for recycling such as printer cartridges, office paper, metal and electrical equipment. Even on street corners you see bins to recycle such items as newspapers and drink cans.

The advent of new technologies will accelerate further the way in which our waste is to be managed in the future, but it is highly unlikely that we will ever reach the ultimate waste free society.

Is it Possible to Get a Top New or Used Motorcycle Price Through Internet New or Used Bike Sales

Oct 24th, 2009 Posted in General | no comment »

I never liked the job of purchasing a motorcycle. It was irrelevant if it was a new or used motorcycle. Definitely, I had a good time strolling around the motorcycle lot on a Saturday morning and perusing the motorcycles. But, when it came to conversing with the sales person and making a deal on a bike face to face I never liked facing it. That is when I found motorcycles for sale online. I discovered that there were lots of things to like about these Internet bike auctions.

The first advantage is the wide selection. There are a myriad of opportunities to buy used motorcycless and also many new bikes to choose from. Maybe you are on the trail of a particular make and color and you can’t find one at any local dealership. You can surf to an online auction site and maybe see hundreds of motorcycles of the type and color searching for. motorcycle auctions will have many more bikes than you can expect to locate at your neighborhood dealership.

One major advantage of online motorbike auctions is the affordable cost of your bike. You can find mighty sweet savings if you search for them. In fact, you may easily get tons of amazingly good deals when you look to buy a motorcycle No matter whether they are run of the mill used motorcycles or used motorcycles from creditor repossession you may find yourself shelling out a heap less money than you would have without an Internet auction. You may want to consider repossessed bikes due to the fact that banks only want to move the motorcycles and may not expect a lot of money. I have benefited from many very low deals on repossessed motorcycles.

A possible drawback of Internet motorcycle auctions is that a lot of the motorcycles will not be in your town. You can specify the area of your search with a zip code, but you will limit the choice of available bargains. If you have a number of buddies throughout the country you should be able to work a deal to have a friend look at the bike in their vicinity on your behalf. You should be able to find third party appraisals and motorbike history reports before you think about bidding on any intended motorcycle.

Whenever you are thinking about a new or used motorcycle you may want to use Internet motorbike auctions during your motorcycle shopping process. Even if you do not decide to buy with one of the auctions you will at least peruse what is in the pipeline and you can compare with the bikes your hometown bike dealerships or listings have for you.

No More Goebel Figurines

Oct 23rd, 2009 Posted in General | no comment »

After selling the M.I. Hummel line of Goebel figurines since 1935, Goebel shut its doors in October 2008. Problems began years before with the owner filing bankruptcy in 2006. The economic downturn had an effect on a company that had been in business since 1871. Although best known for their Hummel line of Goebel figurines many different artists produced drawings that Goebel figurines where fashioned after. Several types of porcelain figurines by artists like Charlot BYJ have had success and have value in today’s market, but their Hummel line of Goebel figurines were always their best selling and most loved figurines.

When Goebel shut down, 230 employees who worked in the Hummel factory lost their jobs. Not only the employees but collectors of the Hummel line of Goebel figurines were astonished and saddened. Collectors were emotional and believed there was no way that Goebel could stop producing the Hummel line. Goebel had tried everything they could think of to keep producing the line, even increasing production of the Hummels to make more revenue. However, this didn’t work and supply quickly outweighed demand.

In 2009 Hoechst Porcelain located near Frankfurt, Germany founded the firm Manufaktur Roedental and they acquired not only the copyrights to the Hummel line of Goebel figurines but also the production facilities. They have hired back many of the former craftsmen and production of these beautiful figurines is again underway. Since everything is still made by hand, one figurine can take up to twelve weeks to produce.

This year is the 100th anniversary of Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel’s birth (she is the artist whose drawings the figurines are modeled after) and the new company is hoping this will respark an interest in the pieces. Many new porcelain figurines are being produced for the occasion and hopefully the tradition of the Goebel figurines will be carried on.

Master Cleanse, A 5 Day Experiment

Oct 23rd, 2009 Posted in General | 19 comments »

I stumbled upon the master cleanse program while looking for more info on fasting, it appears to be a very popular one and is considered pretty solid. Most recently it was brought into the media’s attention again by Beyonce giving credit to the cleanse for their getting into shape.

Reports of other’s experiences were very encouraging to me and gave me an idea of what to expect. A few of the people who I spoke with about the master cleanser diet who had attempted it did not have the discipline to get by the first two or three days. I’ve fasted in the past and never could last without eating at all as most fasts require. This lemon juice cleanse at least allows some nourishment (the drink used for cleansing which uses lemons is why it is also known as the lemonade diet.)

The premise is simple, but simple does not equal easy.. Even with so few rules to follow it can be trying due to the will power required to get past the first few days. Though I found a great book that gives lots of tips & advice to make the cayenne pepper diet much, much easier.

One thing touted is the weight loss from the diet but that was never my main concern. I did it for the toxin cleansing benefits. I’d been really run down lately and had read too many accounts of how mcuh better one can feel after fasting. That made me decide to give it one more chance.

From what I’ve been reading the typical amount of time spent on the master cleanse diet is ten days, although it is not uncommon for people to stay on the cleanse for longer periods of time. I had no intention of going longer than 5 days as a trial run to see how I reacted. Having never gotten past 48 hours in the past I am proud of my trial.

With the secrets book as my guide I was able to look up issues and find answers to questions that enabled me to stick with it. Just from reading it I had much more confidence in my chance of success. That confidence translated into success.

Another good thing was the timing was perfect as I had recently spoken with my doctor about fasting. I strongly urge anyone interested in trying any kind of fast to speak with their doctor first to make sure everything is OK before diving in.

I fell so much better after the 5 day cleanse that I think I am going to go for the full ten days next time. One tip I can give you is to not jump right back into your old diet, especially if you have a bad McDonald’s habit. You will get excellent guidance on how best to handle that.)

An Angel Paintball Gun To Match Your Style

Oct 23rd, 2009 Posted in General | no comment »

The paintball marker or paintball gun is one of the most important pieces of equipment. Having a good marker can be the difference between a win and a loss in paintball. Getting yourself one an angel paintball gun is one of the best investments you can make in paintball equipment and modifying and customizing this marker for your play style is not only crucial but can also be a great part of the whole paintball experience.

During the early days of paintball, players used markers designed for use on livestock and other animals. They even used slingshots or threw the paintball by hands. Not until the true gaming paintball markers were invented did the sport take off. This shows the great importance of the paintball marker. The paintball marker is the heart of the paintball sport. Designed to take a regulation paintball and hurl it through the air at speed of up to 300 feet per second, they are a good example of excellent engineering at work. Today’s players can use electro pneumatic markers, like the angel paintball gun, that can shoot a lot of paint balls at dizzying speeds.

Paintball markers can be customized dependent on how the players use them. Themed paintball matches are often accompanied by matching uniforms and paintball guns are not exempted from this treatment. For woods and other military recreation themes they often sport camouflaged paint and have additional parts like a stocks and lenses to aid in long distance shots, concealment, and ammunition conservation. Professional class markers and high speed markers like the angel paintball gun can be modified to provide better balance at lighter weights for better mobility. Because most markers have separate parts like the body, barrel, hopper, and tank, most of the parts can be switched out for a better one or exchanged with other parts to suit a particular situation.

No matter what your play style is, there will be a marker configuration that will help improve your game. From pump action to the angel paintball gun, customization will add a new dimension of fun and enjoyment to your paintball experience.

The Piano Concerto For The Left Hand In D Major

Oct 23rd, 2009 Posted in General | no comment »

One of the most astonishing stories in pianist history came from World War I veteran Paul Wittgenstein. A man with utter determination to make his dreams come true was surfacing in the pianist world.

The Piano Concerto for the Left Hand in D Major, by French composer Maurice Ravel, was simply a masterpiece. It’s a true testament to his brilliance as a writer, and his ability to change a man’s life.

Back before World War I, a concert pianist by the name of Paul Wittgenstein was trying to make his mark in the world. After being drafted, he sadly lost his right arm throughout the fighting. However, Wittgenstein didn’t believe his concert piano career was over as a result.

Determined to succeed, he began practicing with his remaining hand to improve his left-handed technique. He tried to arrange two-handed works to accommodate his one-handed state. In the late 1920’s Wittgenstein decided to approach leading piano composers of his day and commission works written intentionally for the left hand alone.

Sergei Prokofiev, Richard Wagner, and Benjamin Britten were among the illustrious composers who answered Wittgenstein’s call. And so did Maurice Ravel.

At this time, Ravel had never written a concerto before, though he had written piano solos. He was working on his Piano Concerto in G, more traditionally intended for two hands, and was feeling blocked. Enthusiastically taking up Wittgenstein’s challenge, Ravel studied the left-handed Etudes of Camille Saint-Saens. Ravel was determined that his left-handed Concerto would not be a mere stunt, but a noteworthy addition to piano repertoire.

Once complete, his masterpiece portrayed a dark piece of work about the struggles of a one-armed pianist. It was also about the long road to reinventing himself after a tragic injury. Turns out the craftsmanship was brilliant, and listeners couldn’t even tell it was being played by someone with one hand.

Though the piece has sometime been described as being in two movements, most experts agree that it is a piece written in one movement, but with three sections. Unlike most concerti, The Piano Concerto for the Left Hand is structured as Slow-Fast-Slow, rather than Fast-Slow-Fast.

Wittgenstein was a client who was famously difficult to please. He found something to complain about in almost every concerto offered to him by his all-star line-up of composers. With Wagner’s work, Wittgenstein complained that the orchestration was too powerful to accompany a single-handed pianist, and would overpower the soloist. With Prokofiev’s work, Wittgenstein declared that he simply would not play it.

Even the initial thought behind the Piano Concerto for the Left Hand was negative. Wittgenstein believed the solo cadenza after the opening was too long. In fact, he told Ravel; “If I had wanted a solo piece, I wouldn’t have commissioned a concerto.” However, Ravel refused to change, and over time Wittgenstein began to like it.

In the end, the Concerto for the Left Hand was a true testament to the human spirit of, and more than just the overcoming nature of one man.
