Friendster Social Marketing

Friendster is back from the Web 2.0 graveyard and posted a 40% boost in traffic according to Comscore.  This boost shot their website statistics to 24.7 million unique users last month.

Here’s a little background information on Friendster:

Friendster is available in many different languages. The site has a language link that can change the text displayed on the site to Chinese, Japanese, Korean, or Spanish. Users can customize their profiles with things, such as Friendster layout codes or backgrounds.

Friendster is the #1 social network in Indonesia and more than 5 times larger than the next largest social network in Indonesia. In Indonesia, Friendster has over 5 million monthly unique visitors as of November 2008.

Since there are over 25 million Internet users in Indonesia, about 20% percent of Indonesia visited Friendster in November. Online adults (ages 18 and up) choose Friendster to connect with friends, family, school, social groups, activities and interests.

Friendster: Personal and Corporate Use

It is goofy and eccentric, and I have reconnected with a few cherished old friends on the site. Even so, it’s unlikely you’ll find a mate there, but at least you’ll have fun with it.

The site is definitely not ideal for corporate users. Friendster is not an answer to the network question but an experiment in a global Internet environment. While Friendster is not nearly as popular as it was in its heyday, the lessons learned through people’s exploration of it are increasingly critical to the development of new social technologies.
