Your will   is written to help your loved ones orchestrate the disposal of your estate when you’ve expired. Whilst yours may be simple, here are one or two memorable ones.

Will’s The Last Laugh
It makes sense to make a will. All of us understand this, but actually getting around to it seems such a bother.  How much consideration went in these “wills with a difference”?

Even the legendary magician and escape artist, Harry Houdini, couldn’t escape death. Having died from a burst appendix, one of his biggest surprises came with the reading of his will. His magicians equipment went to his former partner Theodore, who was in addition his brother. His magical skills didn’t work on the next item – his appreciable collection of books on magic and the supernatural. He left these to the American Society for Psychical Research, but with the condition that the research officer J Malcolm Bird, who also was the editor of their journal, resigned. They rejected the offer the collection was given to the Library of Congress.

The white rabbits that he used in his tricks vacated their hats and were distributed amongst the kids of friends. Continuing the unusual style, his left his wife ten words, which formed a secret code, with the avowal that he would employ these words to contact her from the afterlife. Each year for 10 years, following his death, she reliably held séances, but Harry never made contact.

Rock and blues singer Janis Joplin had a brief but notable history. She wrote many rock classics and four albums, including “To Love Somebody” and “Me and Bobby McGee”. After years of drugs and drink, she passed away from an overdose, aged 27. Two days before her death in 1970 her cheap will      the figure of 2,500 dollars to fund an all night party at her favourite pub so that her mates could “get blasted after I’m gone.” It must have been some celebration – that was a large amount of cash back in 1970.

We’ve all read about people that, randomly, donate all their estate to the dogs’ home, much to the disbelief of their relatives. Lot’s of family rows begin when a will is read. As long as the person who made the will is of sound mind and not under duress, there is often little that can be done to object to such a decision.

Eccentricities apart, if you die without writing a will, those whom you would want to inherit will not always be the ones that do so. You could have a partner of many years, but if you’re not married or in a legal partnership, he or she won’t get your estate, heedless of your wishes and affirmations. This can be sad when it’s not clearly understood and can cause awkward financial results.

The modern method to get your will under way is to search online and find a free wills      . However basic your designs are, it’s best to get the professionals to write it for you and you can be sure that you’re leaving your affairs exactly how you would wish them to be.
